I started iff in HAM radio during high school, I was volunteering with the local scout troop in Atikokan, ON and the scout master Warren VE3FYN convinced me to get licensed.
Shortly after that I moved to Ottawa for school, living in a dorm room at Algonquin college with nothing but a HT and a brand new ticket, I searched the many local repeaters looking for active amateurs. Finally I found Mike VA3MPM and Darrell VE3RDC, these two guys managed to secure me a ride to the club meeting and from that day on I was hooked.
Shortly after that, with a burning desire to get on HF Mike and JP VE3JPG came to my 4th floor dorm room and set me up. They strung a long wire from a light post to my dorm room window and with a wire of similar length wrapped around my room as a ground plane I was set. With this set up I was able to make Phone and digital contacts all over North America, Western Europe and the Caribbean.
After school that year I packed up my stuff and moved to Kingston and got bored. So apprehensively I went for an extended visit to Grande Prairie, AB. In GP I met a few dedicated HAMs that invited me to field day in a town called Grimshaw, AB. So I traveled north and participated in field day there. I am ashamed to say that I have forgotten the names of the kind people. At the end of the summer with an unsure mind of what to do with myself I moved to Thunder Bay, ON where I registered for school as an Electrical Engineering Tech. After finishing school I found myself a job working in a radio shop here in Thunder Bay. I have recently got myself a house, where I am working on getting a tower put up.
I owe a lot of thanks to the group of friends I have made in Ottawa witch numbers to many to name, but I do thank you for getting me not only interested but motivated enough to find a career that I truly am happy with.
